The Mad Rock Show and LIVE Video Interview with Mad Martigan!
What can I say another great show with 4 bands in the line up this time: Mad Martigan, The Ambivalents, Southern Fried Genocide, and Jesus's Penises. This time around we have some good ol' balls to the wall rock music, loud, ear piecing at times, distorted, crackling, and so lovely... and there is good amount of folks at this event to witness this (Glad to see people coming out to the original shows it is definitely something needed in these parts.) It seemed as if everyone I talked too that night understood the importance of why we need to support these local original bands, that’s why they have made more of an effort this time around to make there presence known, plus they just wanna rock out and hear something different than the mainstream.
The show started out to the surprise of a lot of the crowd with The Ambivalents, apparently they have been not doing to many shows because there amazing drummer Rich Wallace has had to travel a lot for work, so Andy Harrington in the meantime has released a Solo project called Arbor (which is flippin awesome by the way) so that is what was on the bill for this show. The Ambivalents are a personal favorite of mine with that grungy, Smashing Pumpkins meets Radio Head, 90' alt sound with a very unique twist which sets them apart, and modernizes the whole 90's sound with bad ass skilled guitar playing. Andy, is also a guitar teacher so anytime you hear any of his originals you will be sure to be amazed by the caliber of composition he puts into his music. If you get a chance on one of there rare shows to see these guys do yourself a favor and make the effort you wont be disappointed.
Next up was Southern Fried Genocide, oh yeah! Hadn't seen these guys live before so this was a treat, they actually have successfully put together a Southern Rock Punk band, who woulda thunk that would work, but it does. They came out with a very bold, loud, heavy guitar driven sound, the vocals by Steve-O were very in your face just like real punk should be. Will write more about this band soon, after there next show this Saturday August 25th at Baroos, doing a live video interview, so check back next week.
Then the headliners Mad Martigan took the stage, this was a real progression in local music history for me to see, because Jason Anz (lead singer and guitar player) was in a great band called Thomas Paine just a couple of years ago and now he is the front man of this high energy melodic alternative rock band. Now I had heard some recordings and actually saw this band live when they were just getting things together and to see and hear where it was then and where it is now is exciting and gives me hope that original singer song writers can bring there craft to the forefront. They put together some great in your face music, with a lot of punk elements but keeping a good rock core and I loved the dynamics they have added since the last time I seen them, sometimes it is nice and quiet and pretty then all of a sudden a heavy guitar riff kicks in and Jason hardens his vocals and that my friend is what makes a great song. Together with Kyle Ravel's kick ass heavy drum beats (Hey I know that kid) and the slic skilled tone of Eric Nyman's bass this makes for one Mad Show!
I got a chance to interview them out front of Baroo's check out the video:
The last to come up was the notorious Jesus's Penises, now this going to be a mouthful. What can you say about a band that has there lead singer dressed like the Pope (Pope Cletus Speculum III), there guitar player (Father Peter McFeely) dressed like a Priest, there bass player (Deacon Donkey Punch) dressed like a Deacon, and there drummer (Sister Mary Buttplug) dressed like a Nun and they sing heavy punk based sometimes hardcore driven music about religion. If you are offended by religious humor you have to remember this is just parody, if you take it too seriously then you are missing the point. Now there is something to say about a band that has absolutely no fear when it comes to performance (or should I say shame) with there very raunchy rants on stage, and the craziest chicken nugget Communion ever (yes I did just say that) this is something to see, then go ask for forgiveness afterwards (Did I mention there is a priest at every show). Everybody seems to have an extreme opinion about them, actually while some people might think that is not a good thing to be very liked and very hated, believe me that is a better place to be than a band that gets praised all the time.
These guys are most likely way ahead of there time, so if you are curious to understand this phenomenon then go out to one of there shows, I am sure you will be totally disgusted, offended, pissed off, feel dirty etc… but you will be glad I told you and you will have stories to tell. I don’t expect any Russian tours on there horizon but you will be able to catch them around Brevard County before a lynch mob is formed.
